The Situation

What happened in Kumamoto

At 4:27 p.m. on July 28, 2026 (JST), a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Kumamoto region of Kyushu, southwestern Japan, at a depth of about 16 km (preliminary figures). Uki City and Hikawa Town registered seismic intensity 7 — the highest level on Japan's scale — the first such observation since the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake.

Tsunami advisories were issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas. Buildings collapsed and fires broke out across the prefecture; a shopping mall partially collapsed after an explosion, and a paper mill in Yatsushiro reported multiple casualties. Water outages and rail suspensions continue, and the Japan Meteorological Agency warns of aftershocks up to intensity 7 for about a week.
